Velichov lies on the Ohře River. The village is about 11 km north-east of Karlovy Vary. Its first written mention dates to 1142.

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Velichov was built in 1895–1896 on the site of an earlier church. It was consecrated in 1897. After 1856, when physician Prof. Josef Löschner bought it, the chateau acquired its austere, Classicist-influenced appearance. By the U Lípy inn near the chateau stands a sandstone statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1835.
